soil.

I love the smell of you after the rain, how small creatures squirm their way to the sun, and dance with you til the magpies gobble them all up.

You tickle my skin as I itch and scratch, hidden under my nails you make a home to transport microbes somewhere new.

A whole world inside you that I probably could never fully comprehend, a billion languages written into nutrients and mineral history from the beginnings of life here on earth.

It makes me sad when you’re not welcome into human homes, children’s mouths or on the bottom of feet.

If only more knew of the conversations you wanted to have with them, I wonder whether there would be less people who felt alone.

Soil, I’m so grateful for you.

One day when it’s my time to decompose, my only wish is to give you this well used body back to feed the future.
